| Frequently asked questions about Tribal Neon Dance Paint |
Is Tribal Neon Toxic?
No. The non-run gel base is a cosmetic grade hair gel formulation similar to many others on the market. The fluorescent dyes in Tribal Neon have been widely used in household laundry detergents and applied by textile manufacturers to brighten to fabrics for many years. The manufacturers state that the concentrated dyes do not irritate the skin but will irritate eyes. The levels used in Tribal Neon are much lower so the irritant potential is greatly reduced. Like most chemicals, if you ingest enough of the ingredients in Tribal Neon they could be toxic, but you would need to swallow a couple of litres of product to take a toxic dose. However to avoid any risk of toxicity or irritation we recommend against ingesting it or applying it to mucous membranes, including eyes, nose, mouth, genitalia (thats right - some people have asked!), or to broken skin. Similarly, some individuals have very sensitive skin that is irritated by many cosmetic products. Anyone with any history of sensitivity to cosmetics, detergents, soaps or hair gel products is advised not to use Tribal Neon. For similar reasons we dont recommend applying it to childrens skin. As a precautionary measure we also recommend the use of a barrier cream before applying Tribal Neon.
Can Tribal Neon be used on hair?
Yes, Tribal Neon is a medium-hold hair gel. The fluorescent effect is better on fair hair than dark hair however. For darker hair, best results are obtained by applying it quite thickly to hair tips and then allowing it to dry.
How long does Tribal Neon stay on the skin? Does it run or wash off if I swim or sweat a lot?
The fluorescent ingredients are dyes rather than pigments, so once the gel has dried out they stick to skin, hair, and fabrics quite strongly. So your artwork will remain visible (but only under UV light) for a couple of days. The dyes wash off from skin and hair and fade after 3-4 washes, and off clothing after 2-3 launderings. Barrier creams applied before Tribal Neon will reduce the dye fastness. If you sweat a lot some of the dye may get flushed off, but neither swimming nor perspiration will cause the dyes to run significantly once the gel carrier has dried out.
Can I mix Tribal Neon with ordinary colored body paints?
We dont recommend it. Ordinary body paints, including most fluorescent paints, are pigment based (i.e. solid coloured particles) and will simply mask the dyes from the UV light that makes them glow. If you want to use other colors apply them separately.
How should I apply Tribal Neon?
The formulation contains the optimum quantity of dyes for even a thin film to give a strikingly brilliant effect. This is easily applied with the edge of the foam square included in the pack. A brush gives more artistic control than the sponge, but for best effect in dance or theatrical settings strong lines and solid blocks of colour give the best visual effect. Its worth experimenting first to get the application level right, so dont just start with a big blob on your forehead; make your first application in an unobtrusive spot to get a feel for using the gel. People can paint each other better than they can paint themselves.
If its colorless how do I know where Ive applied Tribal Neon?
In ordinary light its easy to see where youve painted from the wet film. The wet dyes also glow slightly from the UV light present in ordinary daylight. Its much easier to get a good paintjob by spending some time painting yourself up in good light before you go off to the event, preferably with a mirror. Two friends can paint each other better than they can paint themselves. Of course, if you have a UV blacklight tube you will see exactly what you are doing.
How long does Tribal Neon take to dry?
Obviously this depends on the temperature and humidity of the day, but generally allow 3-5 minutes for a thin coating to dry. Thicker daubs will take longer.
Can I thin Tribal Neon?
Yes, Tribal Neon can be thinned a little with water, maybe up to 10-20%, but any more than this will make the gel too thin and your artwork will smudge or run before it has chance to dry.
How much coverage will I get out of a 7ml pack?
The 7ml SnapPak contains enough paint to cover an area of skin at least 1 foot square with a film of optimum thickness. This is generally enough to cover your face, arms, and the front and back of your upper body with solid line designs covering about 15-20% of your skin surface.
How much UV light is needed to see the fluorescent effect?
Dance events that major on UV lighting effects are the best. The more UV light there is, and the closer you are to it, the stronger the glow. We have found that in total darkness a 4ft blacklight tube gives off enough UV to make the dyes show up clearly 20-30 feet away, but if there is a lot of ambient light from spots and other lighting effects this will drown the effect at this distance. For best results stand close to the blacklights!
Can I apply Tribal Neon to clothing and other fabrics?
Tribal Neon will work on most fabrics, but we dont recommend it or accept any responsibility for results. While the dyes will wash out of most fabrics residual dye stains may be discernible in daylight by contrast with the unmarked substrate.
What pack sizes is Tribal Neon available in?
The single-serve 7ml SnapPak is the standard retail pack size available in bags of 5 or 20 units. 120ml jars are also available for performance use on request.
Does Tribal Neon come in any other colors?
Not yet, but new colors are currently being developed by Tribal Neons Medicine Man!
